Joint Pains / bodyache- Vit D, the unsung Hero

With today’s fast forward life style, we all look for short cuts, quick fixes and whatever seems easier and on the go, but this fast pace leap make us miss out few very important things. As a child, I remember , my mom having pains after being overworked, my granny not much , yet she too had few episodes a month; guess what even 3 decades ago, they were dependent on pain killers like Ibugesic or acelofenac. The story is no different today, except for the topping of inappropriate fast food , junk food inclusion in our diet, and more sedentary lifestyle.

There are many diseases prevailing in the society, they always have been but their intensity changes, impact changes as per our lifestyle. Joint Pains are on the rise, which were supposed to be coming in aged people above 65 years, now so common almost every second person you meet, will be complaining of some or the other type of pain. No Age Bar .

There is a long list of causative factors & conditions of joint Pains:

  1. Injury
  2. Autoimmune disorder like Rheumatoid Arthritis & SLE
  3. Gout
  4. Pseudogout
  5. Viral infections
  6. Bursitis
  7. Vit D deficiency
  8. Overexertion or unusual exercises
  9. Tendinitis (tendon inflammation)
  10. Runner’s knee/Patellar Tendinitis/ Jumper’s knee
  11. Obesity
  12. Sedentary life style
  13. Long hours of desk Job

In our practice over last 13 years, have seen a versatile image of Pains- Joint Pain, Myalgia(muscle pain), Bodyache in general, nerve pains like Sciatica, Neuralgias , spondilytic pain, fibromyalgia, etc. In last 3 years esp after Covid 19, what has been noticed is- Vit D deficiency, in our experience 6 in 10 patients are Vit D deficient , including children. The commonest symptom being- joint pains, bone pain, muscle ache, tiredness, fatigue, hairfall, irregular periods, sexual weakness, poor immunity, cramps, dry skin, mood swings. Severe deficiency leads to body deformities-stunted growth, bent bones, etc.

We all are so used to being indoors most of the time that it has reduced our exposure to Sunlight almost to nil. In summers, its too hot, we want ac, in winters, its too cold to be outdoors. To be precise, either its all work and no play or only chilling out at home in front of Television watching web series. Sunlight the most abundant and accessible source of Vitamin D, that too free, yet we fail to use it for our good. Early morning sunlight is the healthiest for all, neither burns our skin, no headache , no UV radiations. Besides our food- green leafy vegetables , fruits like- oranges, dry fruits like-almonds, figs, apricots, cereals ,oily fishes like- salmon and mackerel, egg yolk , red meat, liver and cod liver oil, are rich source of Vit D.

Our fast pace life deprives us from all the natural sources of essential Vitamins and irregular/skipping meals add-ons to trouble, not to forget the Junk or packaged processed foods interfere with the utilization of the essential vitamins that we intake , ultimately landing us in multivitamin and mineral deficiencies and Vit D deficiency is leading one followed by Calcium & Vit B 12 and others. However, there may still be other causes of deficient absorption and here comes HOMEOPATHY to your help. There is a group of Homeopathic medicines just to help you improve your systemic complaints caused due to improper assimilation & inadequate absorption.

So next time, before popping up a painkiller pill , review your lifestyle and correct it first. Do not self medicate or take OTC Vitamin supplements without proper Medical advice because as much is the deficiency so is the worse Vitamin D Toxicity.

Before taking any supplements, kindly first get yourself tested for the same. You must visit the doctor regarding the same .
