What is Conjuctivitis?
”Conjuctivitis” or ”Pink Eye ” is a condition where our eyes are affected. It is the inflammation of our conjunctiva , exhibited by eye redness, sometimes with discharges sticking the eyelids, mostly with pain.
Causes & Types
- Allergic – usually seen during Spring And early summers
- Viral- seen during summers or when ever season favours the spread, contributes to 80% cases.
- Bacterial- again infectious so spreads under hot, humid conditions.
However, it can out break in any weather. In West Bengal its famous with the name- ‘Joi Bangla’, due to repetitive outbreaks of conjunctivitis, common in children, especially in Monsoons.
Symptoms
- Eye redness
- Gritty sensation
- Itching
- Burning sensation
- Increased lacrymal discharges
- Swollen puffy eyes
- Sensitivity to light
- Increased mucus discharge leading to sticky eyelids
- Usually resolves on its own within 7-10 days
