The list is never-ending, with a few genuine concerns, while others are just noise, adding to the chaos.
Oh the Modern Lifestyle has taken toll on all of us!!
This article is simply to burst the bubble and help you understand better. So much of contents doing rounds on Social media. Life has become fast forward, so has everything around us; it’s like you name it-you have it. This phrase alone holds all the keys. Everything has become so easy that physical activity has become minimal these days. The COVID-19 pandemic acted as a catalyst to this situation. Everything went online, work from home, study from home, order from home, anything and everything. Those small trips’ calorie burn started to evade and eventually led to inducing too much comfort to escape from.
Post COVID, though schools reopened, offices turned to hybrid mode, but other Comforts linger on.
If we look back 2-3 decades ago, we can feel the difference in the graph of diseases and life comforts.
- The daily commute, which was primarily walking or bicycling for nearby commute are replaced by bikes, tuktuks, and autos. {Lesser physical activity allowing easy putting on}
- The Family outings, which used to be occasional in the form of picnics with games, home-cooked meals and only a few market-based items, are now replaced by frequent restaurant dining. {More calorie-dense, sugary and processed food intake is helping the rise of obesity}. People used to have a great appetite at weddings and other occasional gatherings, unlike today, when they party every other day, big or small.
- The mode of entertainment was simple and minimal like Television, theatres unlike today, where OTTs have changed the picture with unlimited content. {laziness, less physical activity and more psychological strain}
- As kids, we remember being more on the fields rather than in home, and now kids have more fun watching Tv shows or playing video games and on top of that give them some munchies like fries, popcorns etc. {Childhood obesity and other metabolic and psychological disorders and not to forget the increasing number of children with glasses}
- There were less multistorey buildings so one had less access to lifts, so more stairs; though it was a trouble for ageing knees yet easy access have started giving those knees to the younger gen. {climbing stairs work as a routine Cardio}
- The markets had packaged food items with less shelf life with minimal ingredients unlike today with better shelf life and more ingredients not the basic ones but the preservatives even the so called safer and natural ones. {High sodium, Sugar, highly processed food leads to easy rise in Cholesterol}
- The only ORS we knew was ELECTRAL powder WHO recommended to be mixed with cooled properly boiled water. {Marketing rules over the discreet Medical advisories. Attractive ads are more grossing than the genuine medical advice}
- We had our aluminium wok, iron wok and no body died bcz of it, then suddenly non sticks came promising low oil cooking and now they are villain too. The teflon coating when damaged is harmful so these vessels must be discarded if corroded. They are not meant for high heat cooking so why to bring it in our kitchen in first place.
- The families used to have mums cooking, well, over time the Corporate world has taken over, and mums too don’t have time to cook like dads so….. Food delivery at your service. Even the minimal cooking has become a tough task. {Home-cooked meals, even though rich, have comparatively fewer calories than the same food when bought from a restaurant}
- People used to listen to their doctors’ advice religiously and were not in a rush of quick fixes like today, where Google & AI supersede them. {Incomplete knowledge is dangerous, and so is self-medication and compromising one’s health in the delusion that you are saving time}
- People used to go to marketplaces from the tiniest needle to home décor, dresses, groceries and gadgets, now it’s also just a click away via Instamart, Blinkit, Zepto, Amazon, Flipkart, Big Basket, etc. {Again reduced movements}
- Water was free, money was tough , soft drinks were tempting but not always affordable so when thirsty -people had water , God gifted Cleanser, detoxifying drink; while today water also comes with price tag and money has become easier so everything affordable except the Health. {replacing water with soft drinks lead to empty calories and have lead to rising risks of kidney stones}
- Social media, influencers were missing so only noise was the friendly advices from friends, family and relatives. The Social media has caused more stress and is playing with peoples mind. {Too many cooks spoil the broth, so thousands of noise with doom scrolling messing with your head}
- People used to work hard physically, so sleep was inevitable. A good night sleep has become a luxury in today’s luxurious life. Too much mental work exhausts you, but your mind keeps working, and the cream on top is the Mobile Phone. {sleep resets, rewire and repairs}
I have tried to make my point here. A simple shift backwards might be a big help to stay healthy. Its not that complicated as being marketed. Being a Doctor and serving the society over 15 years , I have witnessed people recover well when they shift the lifestyle and deal with the stress better.
