In the Organon of Medicine, Dr. Hahnemann emphasizes in aphorism 4 that it is the duty of a physician not only to cure the sick but also to prevent illness. This principle underscores the importance of integrating health-sustaining practices into our daily lives.
While the topic of maintaining good health is vast, I want to share some basic measures that I have been applying in my practice since 2011. This decade-old, tested list of practices has proven beneficial for both my patients and myself in promoting overall well-being. While these practices may not completely prevent illness, they substantially enhance your overall health and reduce the chances of getting sick, often leading to milder symptoms.
So, let’s dive into these tried-and-true practices!
Proper Sleep
Establishing a regular bedtime and wake-up time is crucial. Quality sleep allows the body to repair and rejuvenate itself, making it a cornerstone of good health.
Stay Hydrated
Water is a magical elixir and a true blessing. Staying well-hydrated enhances overall health, regulates body temperature, and helps manage extreme weather conditions. It also keeps the digestive system clean and functioning optimally.
Regular Exercise
Incorporating outdoor activities into your daily routine is essential. Choose workouts that suit your health and lifestyle. A daily 30-45 minute brisk walk, jogging, swimming, free-hand exercises, gym sessions, or outdoor sports can be highly beneficial. Always include some stretching in your routine to maximize the benefits.
Pranayama & Yoga Asanas
Engaging in practices such as Bhramari, Anulom Vilom, Kapal Bhati, and deep breathing exercises, along with yoga poses like Surya Namaskar, Vrikshasana, and Bhujangasana, can significantly boost your health. These exercises improve immunity, keep allergies at bay, prevent nasal congestion, enhance lung capacity, and alleviate respiratory issues. Various yoga asanas also improve flexibility and prevent arthritic complaints.
I’ve made a video on the basic four breathing exercises, which you can find on YouTube @medicinegoteasywithdrmrinalini.
Exercise in any form elevates mood and boosts productivity by improving overall physical and mental health.
Balanced Diet
Maintaining a balanced diet with high protein, moderate carbohydrates, and low fat is vital. Incorporate fresh fruits and salads into your daily meals and aim for a more plant-based diet.
Avoid processed foods, packaged drinks, sugar in any form, chemical sweeteners, late-night dinners, and overly hot or cold beverages. Refrain from overeating or unguided fasting and unnecessary medications, especially over-the-counter ones. Limit intake of caffeine, fried foods, overly spicy or sour items, and chemical fermentations or probiotics (opt for homemade curd instead).
Adapt to the weather with appropriate care without compromising water intake, diet, and exercise.
I hope these guidelines are as beneficial for you as they have been for many others. Wishing you good health and blessings.
